Press release 10.5.2007: MTV3 Channel Joins Mobile TV, Nokia N92 mobile tv device ready to enter the markets

MTV MEDIA started programme broadcasts in mobile tv. The programmes of the channel are broadcast simultaneously and unchanged in both digital and mobile tv networks. The Nokia N92 mobile tv device is ready to enter the markets.

MTV MEDIA started the distribution of its MTV3 channel in the mobile tv network on 10 May 2007. The programmes of the MTV3 channel are broadcasted simultaneously in both digital and mobile tv networks. The broadcasts are free of charge for consumers.

The mobile tv network was opened last December, when SBS Finland Oy started broadcasts in its Voice-tv channel and, as the first in the world, Enhanced Radio broadcasts in the Voice channel. Elisa-tv channel also operates in the mobile tv network during the ice hockey world championship tournament, and it broadcasts the live matches of the Finnish national team. The DINA channel of the Arcada Nylands Svenska Yrkeshögskolan broadcasts programmes related to the Eurovision Song Contest in mobile tv network.

“We are among the first countries in the world to create the mobile tv network. The channels now included are the forerunners of the new service. We have strong faith in the diverse range of interactive services offered by the mobile tv. For content creators, mobile tv is a new and flexible tool for producing contents. New, mobile consumer groups can be reached using the network,” says Digita’s Managing Director Sirpa Ojala.

“It is essential for the future of the mobile tv that all major, renowned tv channels participate in it. Without this, the demand for terminals would increase considerably more slowly and preconditions to develop new services based for mobile tv would be significantly delayed. At this point, mobile tv is an interesting trial for the MTV3 channel and a nice extra service for the customers – viewing programmes independent of the location,” says COO Mikko Räisänen from MTV MEDIA.

Nokia N92 ready to enter the markets

"Thanks to Nokia N92 and Nokia N77 multimedia computers, television broadcasts can be viewed anywhere. Nokia N92 will be available as of 11 May from the Nokia Flagship Store in Helsinki, and later also from other sales points. The Nokia N77 multimedia device launched in February 2007 will enter the markets in schedule during the second quarter of the year. Widescreen displays playing as many as up to 16 million colours and high-quality stereo sound will make watching television and listening to music a shear joy,” says Jonas Geust, Vice President, Multimedia, Nokia.

The mobile tv network has broad coverage in the Helsinki area

Digita is responsible for a terrestrial broadcasting network to be implemented using the DVB-H technology (Digital Video Broadcasting Handheld) and management of the network’s channels as the network operator.

“The mobile tv network was commercially opened at the beginning of December. It covers the entire Helsinki area, its surroundings and Turku and Oulu, i.e. more than 25 per cent of all Finns. The mobile tv network will become available in Tampere after the termination of analogue television broadcasting in autumn 2007, at which point it will already cover 32 per cent of Finns. At the beginning of December 2007, the coverage will be as much as 40 per cent,” says Vice President, Media Solutions, Timo Kiiskinen from Digita.

The mobile tv will combine the services of two networks, i.e. the DVB-H based television network and mobile network, into a single terminal device. This means that the mobile tv will also allow interactive services from the very start. To end users, the services available through the mobile tv network include TV and radio programmes, games and interactive services.
